Question

There is a yard sale about a mile from my house, they have lots of old video surveillance cameras for sale, with lens.

Mostly C mount, Computars. 25 mm, 12.5 mm and some wider. These lens have working focus and F stop rings.

Any thoughts on these lens on Super 8 or 16 mm cameras with C mounts?

It depends on the lens. Many of the older tv lenses were made by Tamron. I have used a zoom Canon lens made by Tamron (go figure) and what I like about it is that it has an iris that closes all the way. But the quality is rarely up to cine specs. Although I do use a 12.5 Cosmicar that works great for black and white. Very sharp lens, and fast. The barrels were not made to standards either, so often flare is problematic. I would say if they're cheap and prime lenses and maybe Cosmicar it might be worth it. But they will never match up to good cine primes or zooms.

Be very careful of rear projections, especially on wide angle lenses, although they are c-mount they will foul or even break the reflex mirror on cameras like the Beaulieu. you have been warned!
